Andragogy, the art and science of how adults learn, can be a powerful concept to understand when coaching our clients. Based on Malcolm Knowles interpretation of andragogy, the six principles of adult learning are: changes in self-concept, the role of experience, readiness to learn, orientation to learning, need to know and motivation to learning. By understanding these principles and applying them to our coaching practice, we can help our clients achieve their learning objectives.

About the presenter:

Melissa Maybury Lubin is director of the Virginia Tech Richmond Center, where she is responsible for the university’s graduate and lifelong learning programs that are tailored to serve the Richmond metro area. She is also the principal of Human Harmonics, a coaching practice specializing in the development of emerging leaders.
As human beings we share much of the same DNA, but at a deeper level, we can often find ourselves living in profoundly different worlds. Spiral Dynamics offers a framework for understanding the dynamic forces that shape human experience. Based on decades of research from organizational theorists and neurobiology, Spiral Dynamics lays out methods to understand the deep differences in people, their value systems, beliefs and ethical structures. This presentation will explore this insightful process to understand why we are who we are.

About the presenter

Vicki Saunders has her PhD in Organizational Systems and her Master’s degree in Human Resources Development. She has been a professional facilitator for 25 years. Vicki is a past president of The Chrysalis Group, a non-profit dedicated to creating opportunities to explore the spiritual dimensions of life with creativity, consciousness, and compassion.

What: Get past your gremlins and write that book!

Date: June 4, 2010, 12 noon to 1:00 p.m.

Who: Tom Davidson, SPHR, PCC

Have you ever thought about writing a book and just never gotten around to it? Have you ever seen someone else’s book and thought, “I could have written something on that!” When these thoughts cross your mind, does your gremlin get busy shouting insults about why you’re not ready, don’t have enough credentials, or could never find a publisher? If so, then don’t miss this webinar with newly-published author, Tom Davidson, who asked all these questions and beat his gremlin into submission. His recently published book entitled The 8 Greatest Mistakes New Managers Make helps new managers learn faster and move more successfully into their new roles by recognizing, avoiding, and mitigating the classic mistakes others have made at this important leadership transition. You’ll find out what he learned about the process, what he will do differently next time, and what the accomplishment has meant to him and his business. This may just be the turning point for getting your book in print!

This teleconference is open to members only of the ICF Greater Richmond Chapter.

Presenter: Tom Davidson wrote the book on management mistakes and has coached hundreds of new managers, emerging leaders, and senior executives in the private and public sector. As he grew from forester to vice president of human resources and organization development, Tom learned leadership from the ground up and now helps leaders and their organizations make similarly successful transitions. In addition to BS degrees in forestry and agricultural economics, an MBA, and an MS in organization development, Tom has been a trail guide, survival instructor, radio talk show host, fire fighter, and newspaper columnist. He serves as president of the Virginia Chapter of the National Speaker’s Association. He says he owes his success to “great role models and the uncanny ability to make twice as many mistakes as the average person–in half the time!”

As we all know, to be effective with clients we need to understand them and be able to offer ideas and tools that resonate with them. Each client has a unique way of being in the world and part of that uniqueness is reflected in their perspectives on how the world works along with their levels of development cognitively, emotionally and with respect to values.

Ken Wilber’s work on Integral Theory offers us a new holistic model based on long standing concepts from psychology and the great wisdom traditions. Applying the ideas from Integral Theory, we will better understand our clients as whole beings with intentions and behaviors that act on and are influenced by the culture and systems of their world. Wilber’s theory provides a roadmap from which we can view the client from many different perspectives and decide the best way to enter into the conversation.

The father of organization development, Kurt Lewin, once said that “there is nothing so practical as a good theory.” Stephanie and Philip will show us just how practical Wilber can be.

Speakers

Philip Davidson, Ph.D. has done strategy consulting and been active in multiple community organizations, including the Richmond Ballet, Virginia Performing Arts Foundation and Leadership Metro Richmond. Davidson retired as executive vice president of Signet Bank in 1997. At Signet, he served as chief strategist with additional responsibilities for asset and liability management and internal profitability systems. Davidson holds a BA in economics from the University of Michigan, an MBA from Western Michigan University and a Ph.D. in finance from the University of Illinois. He resides in Goochland County where he spends time with his grandchildren, exploring spiritual growth and personal coaching.

Stephanie Davidson, Ph.D. is the Senior Consultant for Leadership Development with Bon Secours Richmond Health System. She has been an independent consultant with Wellspring Consulting and focused on coaching leaders and organizations towards becoming more values-driven. Her career as an operations manager with Hyatt Hotels provides Stephanie with a keen understanding of the pressures facing leaders today. Her interest in using integral theory as a coaching and OD tool grew during her graduate work with Saybrook University.
